Best Nerdy T Shirts of 2012

It’s revenge of the nerdy t shirt, and “we’re pretty proud of it.” The 11th day of the 12 day sale includes $9 nerdy t shirts. These shirts feature smart owls, mathematics, space, physics and more. You might see the Sheldon and the guys from “Big Bang Theory” wearing one of these tees; or the tech guys across the office.

These nerdy shirts feature funny jokes, intellectual characters, or outer galactic solar systems. To be a nerd you must master something great; hi scores in Atari, know every apple product from the Nano to the TV, have a profile on every social network, etc. Most people that wear nerdy tees are half crazy, half smart, half funny, and half socially awkward more then 50% of the time. Weather it’s a far off talent, or just the gift of shy intelligence. This day and these geeky nerd shirts are dedicated to you and you should be “pretty proud of it” –Revenge of the Nerds

Best Nerdy Shirts on Design By Humans

"Space Invaders" from the 1980s is a classic. Represent the first style video games by blasting the vintage colors of the 80s. The master blasters can represent the old school from day one, or computer technology.

"Smart Owl" is an intellectual bird with his specs, mouse, and laptop. He’s cute, smart, funny and he works on the go. This smart owl is a high tech smarty with an insightful eye, complete with over size lenses.

"The Perfect Tee" has it all, with so many “trends” in the t shirt world, this one makes a mockery out of them all. Ever seen a robot with a beard, surround by lightning rainbows, suns, skulls, and birds with birds. The perfect tee makes a great nerd shirt because it highlights all of the year’s trends in a doodle sketch.

To complete the list of the best nerdy shirt, the "Catsronauts" are a fun addition to the pets we love. Do you love out space exploration, petting your cat, and watching them chase your laser pen for hours? These outer explores have already done that and more.

This complete list of the best nerdy shirts of the 2012 season from Design By Humans. Do you have a favorite nerdy shirt? Add your favorite nerd shirt in to the comments.

Photo Real T Shirt Contest Winners

The winners of the Photo Real contest are now available. These iconic photo real designs hit the nail on the head with great photography composition techniques and excellent themes. There were over 150 entries for the contest, these top three winners took the top spots with composition, photographic technique and racking up the votes.

The first place winner is Door to the World, featuring a boy walking through dark room, to an open door of heavenly skies. The silhouette of the boy is in the foreground, as he walks toward a bright blue sky with clouds hovering through the doorway.

The second place winner is one cool cat. A young cat rocks his headphones, and hipster shades. The retro cool cat shows every hair in this photo realistic print. This t shirt print highlights the photo real qualities of direct to garment printing. The cat’s hair comes out in much higher detail, versus a standard silk screen shirt.

The third place winner is Bear, Bear, Bear, the western Teddy Bear posting up in a high contrast light. A soft light casts over the soft fuzzy texture of the teddy bear, with a paisley print bandana around his neck. The unusual light, texture and character make it a top notch t shirt.

The photo real contest was a new test for t shirt designers and printers. The new direct to garment printing capacity has produced great high definition designs, as we were looking for our designers to test out the capacity of our printers. The result of the photography contest has shown that we can print highly detailed, textured, and wide color range t-shirt designs. The new photo real t shirt design should start a new trend in the fashion and t shirt design world for the 2013 season. There is a new photography category for all new photo real designs, camera, and photography t shirts.

If you’re reading this then you are a survivor. It’s 12 – 21 – 12, one - a cool pattern on numbers, two - the first day of winter solstice, three - your still alive, and you’ve survived another apocalypse. The Mayan calendar has struck its end of time. Really, any of the apocalypse or raptures have been fun to follow. Will Jesus return? Will volcano’s erupt all over the place? Will zombie’s take over the world?

apocalypse shirtWell, the stories will continue from apocalypse and prophecy. With great stories come great t shirt themes. We have saw a huge trend with zombie apocalypse shirts this year, along with nuclear, and polluting the earth shirts. With the popularity of the Walking Dead, and dooms day video games granted a ton of legendry apocalyptic shirt designs.

Even the trends around the internet like rapture photo shoots of bodiless cloths, tons of zombie t shirts, and even NASA got into the mix about the truth behind the Mayan Apocalypse.

But someday you will need a survival plan to avoid attacks, natural disasters, tough economic times, long camping trips, bad hair days, etc. The fact of being somewhat prepared for these situation could possibly save your life.

Well we didn’t get hit by a giant meter, or I personally didn’t get eaten by a zombie, though vampires have attacked my neck, the sun didn’t explode, planets didn’t collide, and the economy is still somewhat intact. Yet all this buzz did led to some great apocalyptic shirts. Check out the DBH survivors and collection of this years best apocalypse shirts. There are plenty of zombie’s, the zombie hunters, desolate earth shirts, and apocalypse shirts.

2012/2013 - Emerging T Shirt Trends & Artists Inspiration

$

Hello Art People, As 2012 draws to an end let's reflect on the themes and emerging trends of the year and look at what things we think 2013 should bring. *2012* *ZOMBIE TEES* 2012 saw the rise of the undead and here at DBH we certainly added to our Zombie category. Those scabby brain biters made a real come back and we saw some truly epic art in this area. *SAMURAI TEES* Always popular but in 2012 we saw some amazing art come from this theme. Some popular tees were born and I do not see this trend ever slowing down. Yay for Japan. Boo for no real life Samurais anymore. *SKULLS AND APOCALYPTIC TEES* 2012 was the end of days according to some and with that gloomy doomy feeling came some darker tees. Some of my personal favorites were printed in this area and we certainly mixed up our catalog with some of these darker tees in 2012. Turn that frown upside down people we made it! *FUNNY TEES* This year our design community got a sense of humour and we saw a cascade of funny tees. Adding some classic designs to the top 50 and lightening the mood made some funny tees very popular this year. A growing area of our catalog for sure. *THE USUAL SUSPECTS* As always we saw the popular DBH themes appear in 2012 too; birds, astronauts, space, big cats, silhouettes, animals and abstract designs all made an appearance. Classic and popular, always a good starting points for a classic tee. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *2013* New Year, New Tees! So as Creative Director here at DBH I am going to offer up some suggested themes for 2013. Sharpen your pencils and let's attack these new themes: *Dinosaurs* - I miss them and although we have a few killer tees already I'd like to see a few more. Get clever and funny and lets respect the beasts that didn't make it through their own apocalypse. *Pandas* - We like them and they are endangered so let's celebrate them while we can. They are naturally funny creatures so get playful or explore their plight. *Comic Book Style* - I personally love this style of art on tees, the TDKR contest gave us some killer comic style art and I'd like to see that filter into the daily contest style too. *Tattoo Art* - I just watched Ink Master and have a new respect for tattoo art, always cool and popular but I definitely think some of your artists could push this theme really well. *Bright Tees* - The Gloom of 2012 is over so I'd like to see some very bright playful tees with some exciting opportunities to explore custom ink colors. *Less Black* - We printed a lot of Black in 2012 and I'd like to see more designers explore different colored blanks in their submissions in 2013. Obviously if you use one of these themes you do not get an automatic print but I thought this would be a helpful exercise. I'll add to it too. Please post any ideas you may have, want to see a designer attempt a certain design idea? Pop it in here and let's see what these masters of the pencil bring! Exciting times. wotto

Artist Interview with MJ the T Shirt Review Master

$

0

MJ is an artist who has won T-shirt contests in several places, several times. She is the face behind teemagnet.com and compete-tee-tion.com (two awesome platforms for keeping up to date with all that is happening in the T-shirt contest world). To call her an all rounder would be to do her a disservice, for MJ is more than that. She is an addict, a creative, a risk taker, a friend, a teacher and an good gal to boot. I snatched her handbag and made her answer my questions or face being separated from her possessions forever.

Obviously she cracked and I got my answers. Here goes:

Q: MJ! Tell me, are you named after Michael Jackson or was he named after you?

A: Actually, we're both named after Michael Jordan :D

Q: You seem to have an arts and graphic tee addiction which is worse than mine. Do you really love T-shirts as much as I think you do?

A: I am definitely a huge t-shirt fan. I've been trying to keep my collection capped at 365 or so (it seems like a reasonable limit), but it's a real struggle. There's just so much amazing shirt art being created that it's hard not to own it all. I'm cheating my 365 limit a bit right now by getting t-shirt pillows made, and will probably do a quilt at some point.

I love how much freedom there is in the medium- you can create art, jokes, or even powerful statements, and those designs get to become a part of the wearer's every day life. How can any gallery compete with that?

Q: For the people who are crazy and don't know about your two awesome T-shirt platforms please give us a short description of both?

A: Compete-tee-tion was my first site, one I started just as I was discovering the world of t-shirt design contests. As soon as I realized there was more than one contest, I started looking for a list of others. It didn't exist, so I decided I'd make it. So now the site exists as a resource for shirt designers, listing new contests, reviewing winning designs, and sometimes including tips and guides.

TeeMagnet evolved pretty quickly. At the time, there wasn't a site that updated promptly and focused on images of new shirts from daily tee sites, so a programmer friend helped me to create one. It's somewhat unique as a t-shirt blog because the content changes every day and it's all focused on imagery. I've jokingly called it the Dennys menu of t-shirt blogs because you can pretty much just point and click at the picture of what you like with no reading required.

Q: You write reviews of graphic tees every week and I like to read them, they can be brutal and I occasionally cry but I love your honest approach. Is reviewing T-Shirt designs something you enjoy. Would you like to be an art critic full time?

A: That's an interesting question, because I think I'm writing with different goals in mind than most people who write criticism. I've always felt like I don't really understand a subject until I've written about it, so for me writing reviews is a way of learning and processing information about art. I think doing so has helped me a lot with my own designs, because I can use the same critical eye and experience to improve on it.

So I'm not sure if I'd want to be an art critic professionally- I'm comfortable with my current habit of using criticism as a means to an end in honing my artistic eye. My worry would be that if the only goal was criticism, I'd get hung up on the writing itself and the reactions of others, rather than using it as a tool for self-improvement.

Q: Let's talk about your art a little. Do you consider yourself an illustrator, an artist or a designer? Tell us a bit about your style, where did it evolve from?

A: My background is in graphic design, but I definitely aspire to illustration. That's actually how I got into t-shirt art in the first place! I had been working as a restaurant menu designer, really immersed in text and in creating order. While it was work I enjoyed, that focus on clarity and cleanliness left me itching to do something with more freedom. Up to that point I hadn't done much beyond doodles, and t-shirt contests offered a way to learn while getting tons of quick feedback. It only took a couple of weeks for me to fall in love with the potential of the medium.

I think my style is still more that of a designer than an illustrator- I tend to favor simplicity and bold shapes. My goal is to improve my drawing abilities so that it's more out of choice than out of necessity, though!

Q: So of all the shirt designs you have had printed which is your favorite and why?

A: It's probably Dinosaurs Who Are Communist for Some Reason. Which, if you haven't seen it, is exactly what it sounds like- dinosaurs dressed up like communists. I'm a sucker for absurdity and silliness, and seeing that design print was a great surprise. I had always assumed that my weirder ideas were too odd to find popular success, and seeing that one print was a wonderful experience. Sometimes it's awesome to be proven wrong!

Q: If I asked you to name one apparel designer who you consider to be an inspiration who would it be?

A: Only one? Then I'm in trouble, because I feel inspired by a pretty huge swath of people, haha. If I had to pick just one, I think I'd go with MissMonster- what I find inspiring is not only her work (which is excellent), but also the way she's built a fanbase and such a trove of great products. I think that's demonstrative of a mind that is always seeking out new projects and new opportunities, and that's certainly something I aspire to.

Q: If you could pick a SHIRTdesign by another artist you think deserves to be printed here at DBH, what would it be?

A: I'm really fascinated by his style, so I think I'd have to go with beecombs's Island Lights. It's such a great mix of real and surreal, the kind of design I'd love to dive into and really explore. It would probably be tough to print, but man oh man would it be worth it!

Thanks again for the artist interview MJ we will be looking forward to your great t shirt reviews, new trendy shirts, and news in the t shirt design world.

T Shirt Review of the Samuri Cowboy...

T Shirt Review Samuri

"Cowboy Samurai Viking Robot Knight Ninja Pirate VS 1.000.000 Zombies by wagnogueira certainly has a mouthful of a title! And the design is similarly packed to the rafters, with one man facing an endless sea of zombies. It’s a familiar set-up, as there are a lot of shirts feature one hero about to do battle with a crowd of the undead. But generally speaking, the lone protagonist is set up as a doomed hero, short on weapons and seeming to face an impossible task. Here, the lead guy is so heavily armed and drawing from so many hero tropes that he almost seems… over-prepared. You don’t doubt that he’ll win this thing somehow, no matter how long it takes. That’s an interesting twist, and the drawing has a smooth precision that supports it well." - MJ from Compete-tee-tion

Approving T Shirt Designs with Wotto (Craig), Creative Director at DBH

Our new friends at DITLO have created a website which documents a Day In The Life, of fascinating individuals all around the globe. They interviewed our very own Wotto and have published several photos and videos describing what it's like to be the Creative Director at Design By Humans. Throughout this week, we will highlight various topics which Wotto shared openly with DITLO so we can give you a glimpse of what it's like to work for one of the coolest companies on the block. Meet our creative director, Craig as he walks us through a Day in the Life at Design By Humans.

If you have ever submitted a t-shirt design to Design By Humans, there is a very high chance that I’ve examined your artwork in great detail.

When a t-shirt designer submits a piece of artwork for review, there are several aspects of the artwork that I look at to see if can be posted online for our daily contest or special contest.

  • Quality – This covers a broad range of reasons but basically the artwork is pixilated, blurry or just not to the standard we expect
  • Placement – This is common, people do not place the art on a tee or they place it badly, this will get rejected because if we cannot envisage how it will print we cannot expect people to vote on it
  • Copyright – If you rip another artists work off, use a logo or symbol protected by copyright or a celebrity whose likeness is protected. We have an amazing network of artists who have seen millions of images, if you rip something and submit it we will find out
  • Format – Distorted, squashed or blurred images will get you rejected
  • Too Many Colors – Learn about the restrictions by reading our Screen-printing 101 and submit art that is within those limits -too many colors will get you rejected.

As the Creative Director of Design By Humans, I approve and review up to 100 pieces of artwork each day. When I arrive at work, one of the first things I do is to review all of the overnight submissions. We have software that allows us to zoom in and review each piece of artwork individually. If it meets the Design By Humans standards a simple click on “Approve” will get that artwork posted immediately. If the t-shirt design is rejected, we get the opportunity to tell the artist why it was rejected so they can either fix the artwork, or educate them for future submissions. We live by the philosophy of educate, support and grow all designers with constructive feedback.

Throughout the day, I will continually review art submissions so artist can begin to promote their t-shirt designs through their social media channels. If you’re submitting, my special eyes are seeing. Keep those submissions coming...

Delivering a superior quality product is one of Design By Humans main goals.  We eat, breathe and sleep graphic tees and making sure that we provide the highest caliber tee is paramount.

Striving for excellence and superior t-shirt quality means that everything must be spot on and checked throughout the screen print production process.  On a daily basis I work with separators, printers, production specialists, and warehouse managers to guarantee the best quality goods are coming from our warehouse to you’re doorstep.

Press checks mean that I physically check the very first T-shirt of every design printed. I look at colors, placement, feel and how close it is to the art that was submitted. Tweaks are made and discussions had and then I sign it off as “approved”. Next the machine kicks into overdrive and the tees get printed. I usually take a second and third look during printing to make sure the design is printing consistently. It’s a tough job but someone has to do it.

Press Checks Design By Humans

Each t-shirt design that Design By Humans delivers has been press checked by me.  I put my stamp of approval on the art, color, and quality of print that you receive.  I stand by our superior quality t-shirts and we back them up with a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

You’d be surprised how much happens after you click “checkout” on our website while drinking a frosty cold beverage!  Your order goes magically through the Internets and appears in our order queue waiting to be processed within 24 hours.

Bright and early, 6AM usually, our warehouse team shows up ready to prepare shirts for their journey around the globe or across the state.  When it’s really busy they show up at 4AM to make sure that all orders are processed in a timely manner.

Anything that comes in or out of our warehouse is met and greeted by our very own “Pacman”.  Paco the Pacman is in charge of all of the warehouse workers and logistics of getting quality shirts into your hands.

Design By Humans Orders
Pacman chatting with Craig about order details

First, we print all of our packing slips by shipping type and priority.  For example, if you’ve made an order that has overnight shipping, you go to the front of the line! Once the order packing slips are printed, warehouse workers diligently scurry throughout the warehouse looking for where your shirt lives in our labyrinth of racks.  Each screen-printed tee has a home address or location code, which you may have seen on your packing slip before. Once the shirts for your order have been pulled, more warehouse workers will review the order to make sure that everything in your order is included in your package and that it’s correct.  They then place a special DBH sticker and the packing slip into your custom transparent Design By Humans poly bag.

If you order a DBH Collective tee, your order takes a different voyage.  Through all sorts of magic tricks and technology, your DBH Collective t-shirt gets hand selected each day by color and size.  We review the t-shirt to make sure there are no imperfections or flaws in the blank.  They are then shuffled off to be printed by one of our 2 digital printers.   The digital print room is the size of small apartment and is temperature and humidity controlled for maximum ink flow.  Once the t-shirt is printed, it goes through a dryer and into a basket.  Once the baskets are full they are whisked away to be either be shipped individually, or paired up with screen print t-shirts.

Once we have a bin full of bagged orders, they then move to our shipping station where a shipper scans the barcode and print a label.  At this point your order status goes from “processing” to “shipped” and it receives a tracking number.  Around 3:30 or 4, we load several bins on the FedEx and USPS trucks to be taken across the globe to land in your post boxes and door steps.

Each tee that we send out of our warehouse is checked for imperfections and passes quality assurance scrutiny from our team of warehouse specialist.   They’re driven by providing you, our customer, a quality t-shirt that we are all very proud of.
