With spring about to blossom, its time to brighten the feature with neon colors. The neon t shirt design contest is themed featuring brilliant colors. There are bright greens, yellows, pinks, blues, etc. We want to see some electrifying neon t shirt designs. The winner will recieve $1500, second $1000 and third $750.

There are lots of different themes and ideas you can start with; the psychedelic movement of the 70’s, to the lasers in Electronic Dance Music. Neons are the out layers of the color spectrum, and they have a special fit in color harmonies. This is your chance to experiment with a new color palate for the brights and brilliants of the spectrum. This doesn’t mean make rainbows, but you’re encouraged to jump into a new opportunity of colors and make something brilliant.

Are you by chance wondering what to wear this coming Valentine’s Day? Well, whether you are hanging out with friends or have a date, know that what you wear does say a lot about your personality. I’m a big fan of me. I think we should all be big fans of ourselves, right? I am not trying to be self centered or snobby, I just have a feeling you’re probably a cool guy if you’re snooping around on a Graphic Tee site like Design by Humans.  Let’s face it; you’re probably one or more of the following:

Girls love all of these things! I’m going to give you some pointers and provide some ideas on what to wear on our favorite day of love. Design By Humans took a day out of the office to hit the streets of San Francisco to meet & interact with real-life Humans in the wild! We gave away bunch of free tees, filmed footage for our State of the Art webshow, tested out our new app, and got some great photos in around the city. From visiting the Golden Gate Bridge, making friends with street performers, to doing a photoshoot with a seagull, Design By Humans Street Team was there.

Day of the dead (Día de los Muertos) is a Mexican holiday that celebrates the gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. With this tradition comes a rich and detailed form of art that centers on the skull and ornate detailing. Design By Humans has a number of cool tees that embody this style of art. Loosely categorized as ‘Mexican Art’ this form of art can also be traced through Latin America, USA, Europe and The Philippines.

In more recent times the day of the dead sugar skull has adorned many surfaces and has become especially popular within the tattoo art arena. Celebrate this cool tradition and take some time to learn about the designs we have on offer.

The Day of the Dead, the soul of the skull, down to the bone, are all Mexican art inspired designs. Influenced heavily by the Hispanic themes from the Day of the Dead to traditional sugar skull art. These designs usually have strong uses of black and white lines with bright colored highlights. Hispanic, Day of the Dead, and sugar skull t-shirts are a cultural collection with deep traditions and rituals that date back for as long as 2,500–3,000 years ago.

The ornate designs with classical references are a bold and beautiful look at design. Let’s have a closer look at some key points in Mexican t-shirt designs.

Ornamentations are the detailed lines, dots and curves. Lots of patterns create a detailed shape that gives energy to the design.

There are a variety of skulls in Mexican design but many have trademark items and details that form the look of Day of the Dead. Marigolds, strong line art, religious symbols and bright color schemes all feature. The skulls usually feature dark eyes with festive colors and creative line patterns. Day of the Dead is a popular design style that is recognized globally.

Aztec art is also featured as part of the Day of the Dead festival. The ninth month of the Aztec calendar is believed to be where the tradition began. A whole month of festivities were centered around the ‘Lady of The Dead’ which is now believed to be the origins of the day of the day festivities we know today. Aztec designs usually feature earthier geometric shapes, intricate design details and art is encased in detailed borders and design outlines.

Mexican t-shirt designs and tattoos often times include a combination of all these techniques. A skull with a rose and unique pattern makes for dramatic effects. These lively designs often have cultural references and meaningful line art that is popular now but has been around for hundreds of years.

Wanna know the inside scoop on winning at DBH? Well as Creative Director I can offer some tips and insight. Reading this will not make you an automatic winner but it will equip you with some useful knowledge and we all know "Knowledge is Power". Let's get this show on the road.

PRESENTATION:

Sloppy presentation will not do. Present your art in the best possible light. This means use actual model photographs or mock ups that show how the shirt will look printed. This allows the team at DBH to envisage a final product. The number one reason for rejection is formatting so make sure you don't have distorted/pixelated images or you will get that dreaded reject email. You spent a lot of time on your art; make sure you present it with as much care and dedication. Let's breakdown the 3 images you submit.

• Thumbnail: This is the first image voters and staff see. Make it count. This should be the image that entices people to click to see more. This image is often rushed and badly presented and that results in fewer views, less attention and less likelihood of printing. Personally I look at every single submission but not everybody will do that. Don't count on it. Make it happen.
• Art Image: This is where we will look to see the finer detail and get an idea of the standard of the art. This should be a clean image presented to show the majority of the image and some detail.
• Placement: Very, very important. This is where we look to see if the design is printable and how it will look as a finish product. It is also the image people see after they hit that lovely thumbnail you made. Sloppy mock ups really hurt designs and there is no excuse for it. You can buy down-loadable psd mock ups for a few dollars or you can use the ones we supply in our submit section. Make sure you take some time over this; it could really help your submission to make the final cut.

THEME/CONCEPT:

We find the most successful designs are those that have a theme or concept to them, meaning the customer can relate in some way to the art or idea. Is it funny, thought provoking, scary, loud and clever or a popular theme? Then you may be onto a winner. People buying T-shirts want to relate to the product and feel that it helps to identify them as an individual. Ask yourself, would you WEAR it? Customers also search for key words to find certain themes or concepts. What does DBH have lots of? Do we need to add another bird tee? If it's awesome, yes we do but consider what the current catalog of designs is lacking. A new idea or concept will get our attention. If you crack this you could become one of our top printed artists. Let's move onto style because it's closely related to this section.

STYLE:

Artists develop a style. A unique and interesting style that people like and relate to. Mr-Nicolo has a very unique style and people who like his work tend to buy all of his tees. They like and identify with his style. Gaining a personal style as an artist is tricky, but if you can, it will help to get attention and a horde of followers. So stylized strong concepts can really stand out and can ultimately mean wins! This leads onto promotion nicely...

PROMOTION:

You won! whoop whoop. We printed your tee and put it up for sale. It sold 20,000 tees. We cheered. Did you promote it? Did we promote it? You bet you did. The point here is we are a business and T-shirts have to sell. We have to pick winners based on this logic otherwise DBH would not be here. So as an artist with a cool concept, developed style and now a bunch of followers you should help to sell the design you made. It's a marriage made in heaven. Many successful artists are successful because they are popular and they have powerful promotion skills. We print at least 4 new artists a month at DBH (usually more) so it's not all about the professionals but if you are able to promote well you definitely stand a chance of repeat wins.

TRENDS:

Look at the T-shirt market and see what is popular right now. What are people wearing and what styles are hip this year? Keep an eye on the market and that will help your designing and also inspire you creatively. I am often spotted in T-shirt stores touching the printed tees and checking out what all the cool cats are wearing.

PRINTING, Know The Science:

"That's amazing art but unprintable as they have it mocked up". I have said this and it happens a lot. Here at DBH if we like a design we will work with the artist to make it more printable. Knowing how things print is valuable. Knowing the limitations and the advantages will help you design for production. Know all about, sizing, screens, inks, pantone colors, separations, discharge inks and other industry details. It will make you a stronger designer and when we look at your art we'll be more "oooh that's cool art and it will print like a dream". Our T Shirt design guidelines are well worth a read as a starting point.

LOOK at what wins:

Take the time to look through our winning catalog. What has won before and what is the standard of the art? Look at your work and ask yourself "Does it fit in with this awesome art?"

First Things first, Make Up!

After trying out some new textures, we had fun with the rainbow effects we got off the iridescent photo backgrounds. Now we're ready for the intragalactic space party.

The Retro Tv helped us out with testing the lighting and backgrounds of each of the photo sets.

Then we powered up two 48" black lights and got some cool color harmonies and contrasts.

The culmination of a 4 week journey concluded yesterday at SXSW in Austin Texas. DeadBugDesign and Cabooth took center stage at the CraveOnline venue with an epic showdown of both art and skill. The live contest theme was "Crave The Grave" and each artist had 90 minutes to complete their design. No easy task when the place is full of people watching every line you make on a large scale projection!

DeadBugDesign on the left came out of the gate strong with a dominant SXSW music theme. A powerful fist explodes through the grave holding a microphone, the cord wrapping around the arm as it dramatically bursts through the soil. DeadBugDesign even added a Design By Humans logo and SXSW type to finish the design off with a unique concert poster feel.

Cabooth on the right started with detailed line work from the get go. A detailed illustration unfolded showing skillful line art. With time against him Cabooth utilized every second with masterful stroke after masterful stroke. Adding shading and small details the image started to come to life in the first ten minutes. The theme rested heavy but the grave element was captured and the final piece had cool rendering and an almost three dimensional feel.

Each artist worked through "Crave The Grave" concept with passion, conviction and both were asset to the Design by humans event. The battle raged for 90 minutes but in the end both artists were victorious. Beautiful art was created, good times were had and a few beers were clinked together is celebration. Both artists were ambassadors to Design By Humans and represented the ethos of empowered artists. About The CraveOnline Design By Humans Contest

The contest theme is simple, "What Do You Crave?" Entrants will be judged on based on topic execution, comments, votes, and engagement. SXSW was filled with artists, musicians, hipsters and innovators. CraveOnline and Design By Humans showed off their skills as entertainers and designs. A full day of live designers, bands playing and networking conversations. Free t shirts flew from the bags as the Street Team walked around meeting new fans and handing out free gear. The Crave the Grave contest produced some great results, as every body was a winner. Both the live designers turn out some amazing results. The winning artists were by DeadbugDesign and Casebooth, both extremely talented artists, and now you can buy one of their art pieces as a shirt by DesignByHumans.
